Shoreline Supper

Aragosta at Goose Cove—over two bridges, clear across an island, and down a thin dirt road winding through a pine forest thick with moss—isn’t the easiest place to find. As with most of the rugged beauty you’ll find at the terminus of the Blue Hill Bay peninsula, it’s far off the beaten path and, as a result, far less congested with tourists than much of the Maine coastline at the height of summer. Lauded for its fine dining and gorgeous accommodations, Aragosta is really only a place you’ll find yourself at if you already know where you’re going.  For Outstanding in the Field’s pop-up dinner series, that’s pretty much perfect. Since 1999, renowned land artist Jim Denevan and his team have been curating exceptional dining experiences in equally exceptional locations.

In the fever dream of an August evening in Downeast Maine, more than 150 guests gathered at Outstanding in the Field’s long, winding dinnertable just beyond the reach of the high-tide line.  As the summer light faded and the waves crashed, guests toasted with local cider and wine, slurped down just-harvested oysters, and spooned out portions of a family-style grilled dinner executed by Aragosta’s James Beard-nominated chef Devin Finigan. As the evening faded into night, Aragosta’s team finished out the meal cooking just by the light of kerosene lanterns and a bonfire.
